Google Business Profile Setup Guide for Doctors (2026)

Published November 2026 · 9 min read

One evening of work. That is all it takes to claim the most valuable digital asset a medical practice can own - and most doctors never do it.

A Google Business Profile (GBP) is how your practice appears in the map pack, how patients find your hours and reviews, and how Google decides your local relevance. This is the complete step-by-step setup guide for doctors - claim, verify, optimise and manage.

Why GBP Is Non-Negotiable

When a patient searches "cardiologist near me", the map pack above the organic results decides which three practices get the calls. Your profile is also where patients check opening hours, reviews and directions before committing to a visit. No website, no directory, no social page converts like a complete, well-ranked profile - and it is entirely NMC-compliant, since it is a directory presence rather than advertising.

Before You Start: Eligibility

Google requires businesses to have a real, staffed location or to serve customers at their location. For doctors:

• A clinic, nursing home or hospital address - straightforward, display the address
• A home-based practice - you can be a "service area business": show your areas rather than your home address, to protect privacy
• A doctor practising at multiple hospitals - one profile per verified location, each with its own address; do not create listings for addresses where you do not actually see patients

You will need a Google account, the ability to receive verification (postcard, phone or video - Google sometimes asks doctors for video verification of the clinic premises), and access to the phone number that will be listed.

Step 1: Claim or Create Your Listing

Go to google.com/business and search for your practice. If a listing exists (they often do, created years ago), claim it rather than creating a duplicate - duplicate listings are a common suspension trigger. If nothing exists, create a new profile with the exact name patients and your boards use.

Step 2: Choose the Right Categories

Categories drive relevance more than any other field. Choose your primary category as precisely as possible: "Cardiologist", "Dermatologist", "Paediatrician", "Gynaecologist", "Dentist". Vague categories like "Medical clinic" or "Health care" match fewer searches. Add secondary categories for the services you genuinely provide. Never add irrelevant categories to game searches - Google treats that as spam.

Step 3: Complete Every Field

Every empty field is a missed signal and a lost patient:

• Phone: one number, written identically everywhere on the web
• Website: link to your clinic website or a booking page if you have one
• Hours: full week including lunch breaks; mark holidays and update festival schedules
• Services: list each treatment or consultation type you offer
• Attributes: clinics can mark wheelchair accessibility, and doctors can mark "online appointments" and other relevant attributes
• Appointment links: if you use online booking, connect it - patients book directly from the profile

Step 4: Photos and Virtual Tour

Profiles with recent, high-quality photos outperform stale ones. Add: the clinic exterior (so patients recognise it), the reception area, the consultation room - never patients - and your team (with permission). Aim to add at least one fresh photo monthly. If you have a 360-degree view or can create one with a phone, a virtual tour is a strong trust signal.

Step 5: Q&A and Posts

Google lets patients ask questions publicly on your profile. Unanswered questions look like neglect and erode trust. Check the Q&A monthly and answer everything - including the questions patients ask most ("Do you do home visits?", "Is parking available?"). Add your own common questions so the section reflects reality. Use the Posts feature monthly for genuinely useful updates: a new service, a health awareness message, clinic news. Keep posts informational, not promotional - the same NMC discipline as social media.

Step 6: Verification

Google verifies listings by postcard, phone, email or - increasingly for medical businesses - video of the premises. Follow the verification flow to the end; an unverified profile cannot rank properly or be edited reliably. Keep the verification details current: if your address or phone changes, re-verify promptly.

Step 7: Reviews and Ongoing Management

The profile is never "finished". Maintain it: respond to every review within days - thank reviewers, address concerns politely, never discuss patient details or give medical advice publicly. Never buy, solicit or incentivise reviews; Google's systems detect review manipulation and the NMC code prohibits solicitation. See our guide to what is allowed with patient testimonials for the boundary.

Mistakes That Get Listings Suspended

Protect your profile by never doing these:

• Keyword-stuffing the business name ("Best Cardiologist in Kolkata") - the most common suspension cause
• Creating duplicate listings for the same practice
• Using a fake or virtual-office address Google cannot verify
• Buying reviews or running review-incentive schemes
• Adding categories that do not match your services
• Ignoring verification changes for years - stale verification details get listings removed

What to Do Next

Once your profile is complete and verified, the next phase is ranking it: reviews strategy, citations, local content and measurement - the full map pack playbook. The profile is the foundation; the playbook is the building.

At PraxGain, Google Business Profile optimisation is the first thing we set up for every client - it is the fastest path from "invisible" to "found". If you would like us to audit your current profile and build your map pack plan, book a free strategy call.
